We’ve all seen the movie “Field of Dreams”. Most of us probably a few times. And we certainly remember when Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner) heard a voice whisper that said “if you build it, they will come”.
That’s exactly what most business owners think when they build their website. Once it is done, the money will pour in. And the more money they spend building the website, the more money they will make. If you build it, they will come.
Unfortunately, that just isn’t how it works! It doesn’t matter how much you spend BUILDING your site, what matters is how much you PROMOTE your website.
About 2 weeks ago I had a company come to me for help. They had a cutting edge product/service that really was pretty cool. They had spent more than $200,000 on product development and had paid a web development company $47,000 to build a website that showcased their new service.
As you might have guessed… they were not selling anything. Their accountant had suggested they ask me for help. So far, so good.
After spending an hour or two going through their website and analyzing what little traffic they had, we all sat down to discuss a possible solution. As I carefully outlined exactly what needed to be done to turn things around, I could see they were getting very uncomfortable. I stopped and said… “what seems to be the problem?”
The owner stumbled around for a few seconds and finally blurted out… “we’re out of money”.
He then went on to tell me they actually had spent well over $500,000 in the last year “getting ready” and were essentially broke. So I asked him… “did you ask the guys who you paid $47,000 to build your website for help?” Of course, but they took the money and ran away as fast as possible.
I then looked the owner in the eye and calmly said… “as my dad used to say… you’re SOL (shit out of luck)”. I thought the guy was going to pass out.
My point here is there are plenty of really ugly websites making a lot of money. And there are plenty of “state of the art” very fancy websites like the one described above that are complete failures. A pretty website guarantees you nothing!
So before you spend a dime on a new website, don’t do anything until you have a plan on exactly how you are going to get visitors (traffic) to the website. The Internet marketplace takes pity on no one – no matter how much money they waste!

I don’t view business owners as successful. I hate to say it, but I don’t have a very positive idea of small businesses in their first years. From what I understand it, you put in a huge amount of work and don’t even come out on the positive side of your balance sheet for about two years (on average). Restaurants especially have a big splash at the beginning, but the margins are super-thin, and if you have so much as three bad months you’re done for. Tap out, game over. There is a logical gap in your reasoning, I think. You say that “unions are vital” to promote “a stable home life”, presumably by increasing the wages/benefits of poor workers at the expense of wealthy business owners (correct me if I’m wrong). Even if you assume that is 100% true, it has almost no relationship to the debate about whether teachers’ unions are good for education. That is because teachers are a very small part of the population, so whatever happens to them will hardly affect the total population, on average. Just having or not having a teachers’ union doesn’t really impact the unionization of other workers.
Shaine – I'm sure that offshore VA's are efficient and economical for small business owners. However, there are plenty onshore VA's that are both also. They may not be charging $10 an hour but some are not too far off from that figure. There is plenty of work to go around for everyone. I would like small business owners try to support other small business owners here first before outsourcing funds overseas.

I agree with you 110% that if the auto companies are going to succeed they will need the cash flow required to support fresh products with enhanced product content focused on customer wants. In fact, I have learned that effective plans always support a vision of success and always focus on customer needs. Unfortunately, I think the US auto manufacturers took their eyes of the vision.

I own both the original t-touch and the expert. The original t-touch had water resistance problems. Internet fora were full of problems. I avoided watersports with mine and it’s been fine. It simply wasn’t designed for swimming or showering. I agree Tissot should have fixed the problem or sold all watches subsequent to the problem being discovered with a warning. Still, it absolutely wasn’t as crap a product as some people are making out. I appreciate people had a bad experience and have a right to complain but it was generally the same problem repeated many times. Perhaps the support in some countries is problematic but it’s pretty good in Europe. It reminds me a bit of the Suunto Core problem. After several years it’s just about fixed but many people lost faith in an excellent brand because 1 bleeding-edge product was under tested. I wouldn’t give up on Tissot. If you’re going to swim with it, you’ll need to get the seals tested every few years. Also, if you’re really set on using it for water sports but not diving then consider the sailing touch.

Essentially there are a range of different licenses and they don’t cost ridiculous amounts. Generally approval isn’t too much of a problem providing the area is zoned as ok for certain types of service by the local council. Historically Sydney has gone for lots fewer licenses which cost a lot more which led to the development of huge beer barns where everyone goes to drink and fight. If you were a small place you were simply shit out of luck. People tell me this has changed in the last year or so.

I’m new in IT and where I work everyone has local admin on their computer. It seemed great at first, but when the accounting server goes down and we’re at risk of being in breach of violation of our union contracts because we can’t print checks, having people come to me with Yahoo chat or AoL mail extension questions is not acceptable. IE 9 isn’t a bad browser by any stretch of the imagination and other browsers have very poor AD interactivity. I’m personally not going to take it to the level where I start stripping people’s computers down to Windows Updates+job critical apps, but I only have 50 computers to look after. In a larger environment I would almost certainly transition to a more rigid system… That’s in my field though, we’re not a dot com, a web development company, a programming company, or anything like that. The only person losing sleep over scripts and SQL is me.
A possible solution would be an option to use a whitelist instead of a blacklist. Allow non-whitelisted emails to be held for 24h before being deleted, so that you could give out a fresh address before having it whitelisted. This would only be a problem if and when the service got popular, though. I find most spammers still doesn’t strip out +suffixes from gmail accounts.
Valve has ruled that they will not pursue people who sell items, but if you get scammed, you are shit out of luck.
