Last night the power went off at my home here in New Jersey. Of course, it was 92 degrees and hotter than hell. And just about to get dark.
But… I had a plan!
About 4 years ago I purchased a home generator just for this purpose and was interested to see if I could get it going and how it works. I dragged it out of the garage and got it started in just a few minutes. That’s right… I’m a “worker man”!
I grabbed a few extension cords, snaked them through two windows and plugged in my refrigerator, some lights, and a TV.
By now, I was sweating like a pig. Seriously. Then I remembered I had an old window air conditioner down in the basement one of my kids had used in college. I lugged it up the steps in the dark and quickly put it in the nearest window. This thing better work.
Went back outside, flipped the switch… and to my amazement they all worked. Even my wife was impressed!
I was bragging to her that we would be comfortable all night and our neighbors would soon be over when they saw the lights. Of course, right about then the power came back on and my dream about being “king of the street” went down the drain in a hurry. Sure, I was glad we had the power restored, but at the same time kind of satisfied that if we did lose power for a few days in the future, I had a temporary solution.
The same thing applies to your business website when disaster strikes. Think about it… what happens if your server (and your website) goes down? What will you do????
One of my tech buddies always says… “it’s not IF your website server is going to go down, but WHEN.”
In fact, this just did happen to one of my new clients that hosts their website with a “local” internet company (big mistake!). Of course, this local company did not have a secure back-up, nor did they have the resources to quickly get all their clients back online at the same time. So, my client’s website was down for several days and their credit card payment system was down for an entire week.
Talk about stressed out.
All because they thought the local solution was just as good (and cheaper) as hosting their website with one of the big national hosts. They now know it certainly isn’t “just as good” and it is way more expensive. The funny thing about hosting is you never think about it until something goes wrong and then it suddenly is the most important thing in your life.
Yes, dealing with local providers makes sense most of the time, but NOT when it comes to hosting your website!
The internet marketing tool I recommend (and have used myself for years) to host all my websites is Hostgator. Yes, they are huge and have all kinds of built-in protection plus a big staff. Yes, they offer all kinds of low cost packages – as low as $4.95 per month. Most importantly, they know what they are doing. And you can call them 24 hours a day. I have called them at 2 o’clock in the morning and immediately get someone who speaks English!
Why would any business even think about local hosting when they can get first class service at economy rates? I give Hostgator my highest rating.

Hello peeps, this is to everyone that has a BB storm and cannot load or check balance. I had the same problem for a couple of weeks but i bumped into a temporary solution for it. You need to go to the phone optons then click on Mobile Network, click on the Menu button, click on Diagonistic test then click on Run. When the test completes, try and check your balance. It should work.

I FREAKIN’ LOVE YOU, MAN. Your bass… damn it’s good to hear it. I WANT more of these songs.
“Well if your companies ENTIRE mission statement revolves around a fundamentalist christian dogma would YOU expect an atheist to want to sign up.” On the other hand, if an organization “works in nearly 100 countries around the globe, combating the root causes of poverty and responding quickly when disaster strikes.” and advertises itself as a mainstream charity business should support in order to help people, not just to evangelize a particular religion, then you’d have to ask why that work couldn’t be done by the best qualified people available for the work in each country. “I never said I agreed with the statement,I was just playing devil’s advocate it seems surprise surprise that the whole submission is an attempt at circlejerking.” Exactly why did you insert those insults here? Did you run out of points about why IBM should support a charity that discriminates instead of supporting an equal-opportunity employer who hired the best people for the job? “hey guys the charity is xtian… therefore it’s wrong!” It wouldn’t be wrong if it were run or founded or funded by Christians, but it would be a lesser choice of international humanitarian charities for you to support if it discriminates instead of hiring the best people for the job, wouldn’t it? “It’s like arguing for a KKK charity. If one exists regardless of whether you agree with their principles you can’t argue against them simply because they choose not to be hypocritical by not hiring black people.” I doubt IBM would donate its winnings to a KKK charity. But if the KKK claimed to be running an international organization designed to help people in over 100 countries, but actually only hired people of their founder’s race, I’d think that was an argument against supporting that charity. “My point being is this. If you’re going to ague this don’t be hypocritical.” OK… “Argue that you disagree with ti because it’s a xtian charity not because they only hire XTIANS!” Christians and non-Christians can run charities where helping other people is the top priority. If they stayed focused on their humanitarian work, I would think they were worth broad corporate support to a greater extent than I do if they discriminate in their hiring. “if you think they will discriminate against who gets the money then you are arguing something different. you’re not an idiot you can see what i’m trying to put across here right?” Name-calling is a great way to persuade people of your points.
I didn’t see this movie.
Uppity, would you consider sharing your recipe for the marinara sauce? I love zucchini (and I'm thinking about the flowers) and all the other stuff, but there seems to be a bumper crop of everything this year (and I'm not complaining). It's probably related to the fact that instead of our usual hotter-than-hell July and August, we seem to be getting Oregon's weather and rainfall, and they are hotter-than-hell, but since they voted for Obama, seems fair to me.
They're going to have to catch me and hold me down before I take one of those flu shots. I was young and thought I was invincible during the last swine flu shot debacle, so I didn't even consider getting the vaccination. Then when so many had such serious side effects, I was glad I didn't. Now I'm old and cynical and suspicious of everything concerning the government. They'll have to come up with something else to weed me out.
The best thing to do now is to call at least three heating / ac contractors, they can do the calculations and explain what size furnace and ac unit you need. Most contractors provide these estimates free.

It IS 2011, and lots of people work from home, running a business just like John & Sherry. The blog is a business. I ran a business from home for 10 years, so I can appreciate the difference in when you have to work “on” the business (website, advertising, office work) vs “in” the business.
great job

A surplus is like saying I made the minimum payment on my credit card payment this month, going on a shopping spree with the card, then digging a penny out of your pocket and saying “look – I have a surplus”. The Federal Debt went up each year under Clinton. Ignoring the debt increase and saying you have underspent you budget by less than 0.1% and celebrating a “surplus” is laughable. Obama’s High Speed Train cost as much as Clinton’s “surplus”. Yeah – there is a whole lot to “erase” there.
Well depending on your boss he may record websites which where visited while being at work. There are quite a lot of companies who fire employees due to a high amount of personal computer use (including the web) while being at work. Just don't use it private while at work. Facebook and other non business related websites can wait they won't get bad
Sorry that I might sound like a putz however business is business and private is private. The way they are checking your surfing behavior are most through proxies. The proxy server is the server in your office which handles every query which was send through your internet browser. Some companies run logs and evaluate them to check for misuse of the company network. I personally did setup servers for exactly this issue and unfortunately there are a lot of people who think they can take advantage out of company networks and fast internet services. Just don't do it !!

Yeah, its about time. This is the kind of thinking that all the major music labels should have been coming up with 10-12 years ago instead of sitting around and doing nothing (aside from the occasional frivolous law suit against 12 year old girls) and getting their clocks cleaned by all the interweb users.
As you mentioned, that truly is a shame they are not sharing some of this revenue directly with the smaller indie bands that myspace what it is.

Colin’s comment about his generation not knowing a lot about this time kind of amazes me a bit. When I was a teen, I could not get enough of the history and biographies of that time and of the royals.

There had been exceptions, but usually you will need a couple hundred thousand dollar to get there and at the same time yo need protect your product with IP.

It is getting way too fragmented and I don’t even understand why they all want to get in a business where they lose $. There is only one company in the radio business that makes $ and that is Sirius XM.
Energy companies discredit true wind power capabilities by forcing it upon us improperly. You can get 100% power out of a home generator but when the energy companies put it on the grid we pay the full subsidized price and receive only a fraction of useful power. At 2% that would mean for every 1 billion in spending we would get 20 million in power.Where did the other 980 million of tax payers dollars go?
Others need to be entering the debate as I’m not personally a professional physicist, and couldn’t do the calc I brought up myself, don’t know if anyone else can?; but in response to your answer I find myself wondering if such “head-on, near-zero sum combined linear momentum” collisions would have been more probable in the early universe– if so, again the idea would be that we should see the mass signatures of one or more smaller mass black holes as artifacts of that process.

A Buddhist would describe suicide as a temporary solution to a permanent problem.
“…the withdrawn dimension of objects, the pure past, or virtualp roper being must be thought as potency or the potentiality to be actualized otherwise or differently under different conditions. Entities or substances can thus never be identified with their actualized properties as these are but the crust or rind behind which the substantiality of substance withdraws, holding its molten potentials within reserve.”
Tim! Those sentences were dedicated to you! What an honor, what an incredible honor. You must be over the moon.
If I were Cultural Tzarina For a Day, I’d commission Robert Battles to choreograph this paper for a Samuel Lee Roberts solo, replete with theatrical props–blooming flowers, extension cords, and interlocking chains, to be performed in front of a huge flat hung with animated signs.
Then the world would see “thought as potency.”
And only in MS Windows are those windows referred to as windows. It’s not like you can have two windows of safari open in OSX or anything like that. And even if you could it would be called something completely different.

Pat Wynne, glad to hear you enjoyed Fiddler on the Roof so much; that was July 2006. It was a hoot to be one of the six musicians ensconced in the 2nd floor of the set even though we could barely see a darn thing and it was hotter than hell for the last week. Many sold out performances, and all the audiences were great.
Richard Winters, also a local, was both a fine Tevya and the director of the production. At least a couple of the actors had professional vocal experience, and while only a couple of the musicians had made an exclusive living in music, all had a long history playing professionally. IIRC, *Everyone* were locals save for one of the musicians, and he was in the process of moving here.

When and if you choose to get a MacBook, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of either iWork '08 or Office 2004 for Mac. I'm not certain how well Office works for Mac, I've heard good and bad. I have experience with iWork 08, so that is what I will discuss.
iWork '08 is a productivity suite designed by Apple for its macs. The software comes with a word processor called Pages, a presentation software application called Keynote, and Numbers, which is a spreadsheet application. I would highly recommend you visit an apple store and ask to see these programs in action so you can get used to them. All of these programs (not certain about Numbers) comes with an "Export" option that allows you to convert your document into a variety of extensions so they can be viewed on different computers. For example. On Pages I can do a position paper, then export it into a MS WORD document, a PDF file, a RICH TEXT document, etc… I can do the same with Keynote. I can convert a KeyNote presentation into a POWERPOINT file so it can be viewed on most PCs.
I really enjoy using macs. You probably will to. Almost anything that can be done on a PC, can be done on a mac. The only problem is playing video games and watching some protected windows media files. If you don't do either, you should be fine.
EDIT: Also, I recommend if you choose to get a MacBook, two things:
1) In October Apple is releasing a new version of its operating system. OS X version 5 "Leopard". It adds a bunch of new features. They are not necessary, and nobody knows for sure how well its going to turn out. If you are interested in getting the newest possible system, I would wait until its released and the new computers come bundled with it.
2) There is an adapter you can look at if you plan on doing visual presentations in your lecture halls. Not all lecture halls are the same, but the adapter is called a mini-dvi to VGA adapter. It allows you to connect to a lecture hall projector. It's totally up to you if you're interested.
Because honesty is viewed by most as a distasteful commodity. Brutal honesty leads to the painful truth…and even though it is the truth, people would rather not have it thrust into their faces. People generally don't like to acknowledge their foibles, peccadilloes and out and out faults. They would rather believe that they are better than they actually are, rather than face the truth and work to improve what they are. First, because they would have to admit they are not perfect; second, because it would take work; and finally, because they have made a choice to be the way they are and they like being that way…or they would be different.
There is "kindness" in "brutal" honesty, because it allows people to see what they are. The problem comes in admitting their imperfections and accepting that they are human, just like everyone else.
Website doneski…finishing up some letters, printing resumes, designing business cards….Imma business bitch.
Of course it’s a load of bullsh!t. Say you’re a business owner that currently has a Ranger but it has alot of usage and needs to be replaced. Now say you work in the streets of NYC. Can you picture parking a monster like an F150 in the streets of NYC? Absolutely not. And the Transit Connect may not have the cargo capacity like the Ranger or the tow capacity I need with my Ranger to pull say a mobile Ingersoll Rand Air Compressor. I’d say “f#ck it. You guys wanna take away a necessary tool I need in favor of a much larger one that will make my job much harder when I can’t find a parking spot big enough for it in the city? Which way to the closest Nissan dealer?” You’re playing a worker man version of goldilocks. This truck is too big…this vehicle is too small and can’t tow my air compressor. Well…..the Nissan Frontier is just right. Would’ve been the Ranger but they missed out. Your loss Ford.

Don’t forget internet marketing. I put off my PhD (in which I wanted to focus on computational semantics and pragmatics) to work for an internet company that went from 10 to 50 million dollars in revenue in under two years and is now slated to break 100 million. Internet marketing is now taught in CS classes (see for example, chapter 8 and relates from everything to data mining, bayesian classification, algorithmic game theory, machine learning, etc…. It is a fertile testing ground for academic ideas. My first 3 months were spent doing research on the next 18 months of infrastructure build-out and hardware purchases that will support the expanded need of marketers to target consumers based on online behavior. There are numerous “marketing” companies employing various types of academic technology (Autonomy Attensity RecordedFuture and more). The simple connection between natural language search engines and internet behavior drives the need for the linguistics side of things.I agree with
The comment by LS2LS7 is incorrect. Most if not all Euro 220 volt mains also have two 120 volt legs at 180 degrees with a safety ground. They just never carry current on a neutral leg. Norway used to have an ungrounded system in some areas but even that is gone I think.

I buy lots of stuff on eBay, especially from sellers from Asia, they generally ship to most places since the shipping is the same for them regardless of where they ship to (although shipping usually take 2 weeks or so). Clothes might be challenging since they only seem to sell “one size fits all” sizes (which is generally a size XS, but if you are skinny, give it a try), but if you need random things like USB cable, extension cords, replacement battery, anything made out of plastic, etc, I’d go with eBay.

I would say any writer who isn’t prepared to handle the marketing side of the business isn’t yet cut out to be in the freelance business. It comes with the territory. You could outsource it, but if you want someone truly qualified (as opposed to all the garbage, spam-infested “Internet marketing” services out there), you’d better have a significant budget to invest in that up front. I’d wager that most new freelancers do not. Besides, you can’t really outsource networking. That’s about personal relationships, and it’s an extremely important part of an overall freelance marketing plan. Marketing isn’t all about direct selling. Even if you’re not comfortable with that, there are plenty of ways to market your service — blogging, commenting on others’ blogs, building your network, improving the copy on your business website, offering freebies to attract traffic (like a short free report for your target market), etc.

Seems like a legit way to make a home generator. If you could get a metal with a high melting point and put water in it, you could make a steam generator. Using a series of condensing tubes, and keeping the system closed, it would be long lasting. Convert the energy into battery power for storage, then convert it back to power your home. If you live in the southwest where sunshine is cheaper than power bills, i would recommend building it.
thumbs up cuz you took the time to take all those pictures to make this video

Always take extension cords (sometimes the places you go don't have them). Always have a friend at home who can overnight something to you (i.e., power cord for laptop when you've left yours behind). And of course, also take a large measure of patience and flexibility!

You really can't make partial payments like that.
If you have a paypal account you could use the cards to add money to your account, and then use your account balance to pay for the item in one shot. Or you could send a message to the seller asking him to send you two invoices in the amounts you require and then pay each of those using a gift card (not sure if the seller can do that but it is worth a try).
Hope this was some help
Thank you Manor! I have been looking for the title and the author of the song and I have no idea what they were. The pictures are very impressive and suggestive but, in my opinion, all have anything unusual. I like specially two of them: the photo wiht the word lies in red, the wall painted in an spectacular white and the intimading shadow over the person like a…blade? It seems like this poor person couldnt go on…; the other one inspire me a little sorrow and sadness about the worker man beside the word victory, but victory not for him, I am sure. However, the first photo with the woman in red is very nice. If the woman knew about the photo, maybe she would feel very very special. An interesting site Warren. Thanks.
I think that the little shrine idea in Nythera's first quest was an excellent idea. Perhaps things like that could be scattered throughout the game, but only in areas you travel through. Some of the best weapons for your level, Non-DA and DA alike, could only be found by exploring. It would be a spoiler or ban-able spoiler to tell it on the forums. This might be a temporary solution.

There are so many benefits to buying local particularly when the local company produces quality products. To name a few – as if they aren’t obvious – buying local helps the local economy (local people are employed, they make purchases locally which go into community taxes which help support the maintenance of the community which makes for happy people generating happy community generating a good environment so life is good ) Transportation is far less reducing carbon emmissions increasing the environ’mental’ feel good factor. Reducing transportation also means a reduction in fuel consumption which in a microscopic way tries to minimize gas prices – a bit of a stretch but if you follow the reasoning it actually does work. And although the best beer comes from Michigan – I still think that our neighboring states can be considered sufficiently local

Failure is inevitable. Becoming strong enough to handle it for ultimate fulfillment is a choice. Learn from failure to eliminate it. Success is a habit and a habit, not a “chance”. Successful people believe this, unsiccessful people working for another man don’t. >Especially with the shit economy today, that can be a pretty devastating blow. There’s no recession in the internet, start an internet company. Clearly you vehemently disagree with my POV. Tell me if I’m wrong… You don’t have a coach/mentor that lives the life you want and is willing to teach you how to get there, you don’t read books on business/success, you don’t listen to speeches by successful people, If you own a suit you only own one. You don’t associate with many people making $100k plus a year, and never any millionaires. You don’t own a business and your parents don’t either. There’s nothing *wrong* with any of this, but if you change these things your life will be all the better, and many of my words will *click* then. If not you will never have that shift in paradigm to really understand what I’m getting at. But I’m sure you’ll do amazing things anyway. I believe in you buddy
80 people disliker’s were surely UGLY….
You’re Beautiful my Angel, Robby…It’s True..
Sounds great! Unfortunately it violates the laws of thermodynamics, which fools and hucksters have been trying to beat for well over 150 years.
Wholesale, with a volume discount, and not counting shipping, I can get 100 foot long 16/3 extension cords for just slightly under $20 each. But 16 gauge is not appropriate. The twelve gauge ones are $40.
It can take another 8 to 12 weeks. Foreclosure are the most complicated to buy. Too many signatures needed along the way.
Grin and bear it
I imagine them using one of those orange extension cords, only it’s miles long.
OK, I just bought 2 250W Metal halide commercial shop lights just like yours for $30.00 each from Craig’s list. How do you use the lights without that big reflector and without the ballast on top. I wish I could have found 400W but 250W should do the job, I hope.
Takes a little while to get used to, but once you’ve got it down, you can coil nearly as fast as the typical “cable around your elbow and wrist” move that 99% of people do with extension cords.
Any other solution apart from killing the bastard Gaddafi is only a temporary one. He has to die ASAP, him + sons 2 end this catastrophe now
Natural monopolies happen because a company is providing a better value to society than its competition. If by doing so, they destroy all competition, then decide to raise prices, it opens up room for competition again. Going back to cable, assuming you and I found an ingenious way to provide cable to the masses for $30/mo at a profit, and we even found the financial backing for it. What do you think it would take for us to start the company? I’d say that the government barriers to entry would make it almost not worth the effort because of all the guidelines we’d have to abide by. However, in a free market, if by posing a threat to your local company charging you $200/mo, they had to drastically drop their prices to drive us out of the market to maintain their monopoly, that would be a win for society.
To your question… Creationists: What do you mean by the word "kind"? I'm looking for a definition, not just examples.
The simple answer would be what do you mean by kind, for instance the Bible says be kind to one another, it also tells of creating in kind or type.
If by creationist's you mean those who believe in a creator God, I would have to say there is not a simple definition that your question calls for.

Beer, the cause of, and temporary solution to, all of life’s problems.
A long time back I worked for a company who was contracted by a large cable internet company to do phone support. Due to technical/business problems they were not ready to give our company access to their systems by the time the contact started so we were paid to come in and do nothing all day. This continued for something like 3 months. The contract was in effect, so we were still getting paid but we couldn’t do any actual work. I spent the whole time surfing the web and playing gameboy making over $15 an hour. By the time they got things running I got a new job a few months later.
